Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.
According to reports, Mr Kyagulanyi, who was arrested last Monday
over claims of inciting residents to pelt President Yoweri Museveni’s
entourage with stones was tortured by the army.
While appearing in a military court on Thursday, reports indicate that
a semi-conscious Mr Kyagulanyi seemed unresponsive.
Calls for release
Under the hashtag #FreeBobiWine, Kenyan celebrities have come outcalling for Mr Kyagulanyi’s release as others criticized Museveni’s
government.
"When our leaders have become misleaders and mentors have become
tormentors. When freedom of expression becomes the target of
oppression, opposition becomes our position,” Victoria Kimani wrote.
"Free Bobi Wine,Its not a request, Freedom for ugandans," DJ LYTMAS wrote.
Rapper and producer Naiboi wrote, “I pray for you and your family!”
as Sautisol stated “where is my freedom of expression? When you
charge me because of my expression?”
Willy Tuva May wrote “God protect you and give you strength to
overcome this” while Dj Krowbar stated that “@bobiwine He is
currently in Uganda Military Prison having being accused of treason.
This is because of a power hungry president who is not ready to
relinquish power to the next generation having being the president of
Uganda for over 30yrs.
Say a prayer for him and his family. Imagine what the wife and kids
are going through.”
UK travel advisory
On 19 August, the UK issued a travel advisory warning its citizensagainst visiting Uganda amidst heightened political tension.
“There is an increased likelihood of protests, which may turn violent,
across Uganda,” part of the statement read.
The travel advisory comes two days after 20 people were arrested by
Ugandan police during protests calling for Mr Kyagulanyi’s release.
